How to become an FSY Counsellor or Member of Staff

Counsellors have a major influence on the youth and play a pivotal role in the success of FSY conferences.

We are looking for young adults to take care of the youth during the FSY week who are role models in how they follow Our Saviour, Jesus Christ and live according to the principles of the gospel. We want young adult leaders who love Him and who strive to keep His commandments.


Requirements



Be a young adult member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints


• Have a love for and a testimony of the Saviour and His restored gospel


• Hold a current temple recommend


• Be interviewed and endorsed by a member of your bishopric (see counsellor application form)


Be capable of serving as a mentor and leader to youth and other staff.


• Love of and experience in working with youth


• Be single or married with no dependants at home (please note that married couples must both serve at the same session of FSY and will not be able to share a room during FSY)


Be a minimum of 19 years of age on 1st January of the year of the session and a maximum of 30 years of age on the first day of the session (exceptions may be made for young adults up to 35 years of age on the first day of the session, contact your session administrators for more information)


Have at least one year of university education, one year of work experience out of school, or comparable missionary experience for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.


• Pass a background check.


• Complete all mandatory training requirements which includes


    o Pre Mini-FSY Online Training

    o Attending whole of Mini-FSY Training

    o Attending whole of weekend before FSY Training


Be prepared to serve a full week of long hours with only a little sleep


• Exemplify the following characteristics:


    o Willingness to help the youth:


  • Strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ
  • Feel joy and belonging as they live the gospel of Jesus Christ       
  • Strengthen their testimony of the restored gospel


    o Ability to teach the principles of the restored gospel


    o Organisation and good time management


    o Leadership and good judgement


    o Professional communication and interpersonal skills


    o Reliability, self-motivation, problem solving skills


    o Teachability, accountability, adaptability, positivity & responsibility


    o Receptive to and action on feedback and direction from leaders


    o Ability to work closely and well with others


Responsibilities

Assigned to group of 8-14 youth of the corresponding gender or as a one-to-one counsellor to youth with additional needs


Ensure the physical safety and promote the spiritual well-being of each participant attending FSY, especially the youth in the counsellor’s assigned group.


Be an example of a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ


Effectively teach and lead formal and informal discussions that are consistent with the doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.


• Act as an exemplary leader, role model, and mentor for youth and fellow counsellors


Interact with and motivate youth in a kind and uplifting manner.


• Work well with a co-counsellor and contribute as a team member.


Exhibit the mental health and emotional stability necessary to safely engage with and be responsible for youth and perform duties effectively in stressful situations.


• Read and study the FSY Staff Handbook prior to first week of service and continue study throughout service.


Young adults who serve at FSY have a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and His restored gospel, and they promote principles consistent with Church doctrine.


They are worthy to enter the temple, able to help youth understand the scriptures, and uphold the principles taught in For the Strength of Youth: A Guide for Making Choices.


They are humble, reliable, and have a positive attitude.

Applications

Please open an online profile with a photo. Download and print out the application. The form needs to be signed by you and your bishop/branch president, following an interview. Upload a scanned copy of the signed form and submit the application.

If you are currently serving a mission please ask your mission president to sign your form. You can then upload your signed form and submit the application.

Online applications may start on 1 November every year and will be end as soon as a sufficient number of counsellors and other members of staff have been called. Applications will continue to be considered until the number of counsellors needed are called.
